We aim to help customers achieve operational excellence and food safety, thereby enabling the customer to improve their manufacturing processes, reduce costs and help protect their reputation.
We do this by supplying:
- the world's leading companies in the power industry
- power generation companies, be they local, regional, global private or state owned
- more than 1500 power plants with lubricants and fuels
- power generation and transmission companies in 70 countries
- a full range of lubricant products, including low and medium speed engine oils, factory plant maintenance oils and industrial speciality oils
- continuity, consistency of supply and guaranteed product quality
Shell is the world's largest owner and operator of rotating equipment. Through its Joint venture affiliate, Intergen, Shell now includes large commercial electricity generation within its business interests. Intergen has 10,603MW in operation and is developing a further 6,500MW capacity throughout the world.
Environmental
We continually look for new ways to reduce the environmental impact of our operations, products and services throughout their life.
We are expected to meet our target to reduce emissions to 10% below 1990 levels by the end of 2002 and are committed to developing innovative environmental solutions for industry operations.
Social
We aim to respect and value personal and cultural differences, try to help people realise their potential and protect them from harm from our products and operations. We do this by:
- Ensure our contractors and business partners work in ways that are compatible with our Business Principles - opens in new window- for example, we cancelled 100 contracts that were incompatible, mostly relating to safety, environmental performance and business integrity.
- Actively encouraging and supporting the development of local contractors and suppliers. In 112 countries, more than 50% of the total spend on goods and services was inside that country.
- Employing some 91,000 people, the majority of whom are local.
- Making voluntary social investments - opens in new window worldwide - total social investment for 2001 was $129 million.
Economic
Successful financial performance is essential for a sustainable future and contributes to the prosperity of Society. In 2001 we:
- Saw a total oil products sales volume that was 3% higher than in 2000
- Strengthened our presence in key established markets and broadened our base in new markets
- Sustained our world-leading brand share preference position - for the fifth year running we were ranked number one globally for brand preference
- Renewed our commitment to fair competition, no bribes and no political payments - a zero tolerance policy
