In light of this year’s International Women’s Day, read the interview with our Shell Indonesia President Director and Country Chair, Dian Andyasuri on diversity and inclusion, women empowerment, and women’s role in energy transition.
I want to continue to inspire movement that will not only about me inspiring others, but also others inspiring even more female population in our ecosystem - to believe in themselves and in whatever dream they want to accomplish.
1. When you first joined Shell, did you feel that the company could be one in which a woman could be the country head?
Absolutely. Even 14 years ago I have watched how Shell value and being consistent with gender balance merit-based approach by continuously appointing female leaders in the organization and decade onward, it is just keep getting better.
2. Have you seen changes within the company in the areas of inclusivity and diversity over the years?
Definitely, and it is not about what is ‘in’ at the moment but a thoroughly consistent approach over the years. In all the organization I joined whether that is Finance, Global Commercial, Consultancy and now Mobility, there will always be people from different nationalities, genders and other diversity elements working hand-in-hand with common denominator, that we are all here to make the world a better place and continue to grow amidst the energy transition.
3. As Shell launched the new Powering Progress strategy, how do you see the energy transition of Shell in Indonesia and the role of women in this space?
Energy transition is a truly wide area to address and in each of the area, I can truly see that in Indonesia, there are many initiatives taking place. This opens the door for more collaboration between Shell and Indonesia, extending our support for the country’s energy transition agenda and pave the way for us to hopefully become the next heartland for Shell Group in energy transition. And speaking about the role of women, female population in Shell Indonesia is critical contributor for this success. Together with everyone in the organisation, they play an important role to capture values, to move the needle very materially in energy transition-centric initiatives and eventually, to also pose the challenges on what else can we do to strive for success. Just to name a few, in Lubricant Supply Chain, in Mobility, in Nature-Based Solutions, we can see female professional playing extremely critical role for our success.
4. This year’s theme for IWD is #BreakTheBias – what comes into your mind when you hear the word ‘bias’?
It reminded me of my commitment to always be aware of multitude of biases that can stand between my ambition to help all Shell Indonesia employees to be the very best version of themselves, and that which will help them to achieve success beyond what they can dream of. That everyday I wake up, I am thinking more ways to help fight these biases of me and all the leaders in the organization.
5. How do you plan to continue inspiring, empowering, and positively driving women to their full potential?
I always welcome and actually seek new learning – thinking about what else can I do to drive positive impact to all women in Shell ecosystem and beyond. I encourage all women to be the very best version of themselves and deliver outstanding achievements so then they can inspire even more women to be even more successful. I want to continue to inspire movement that will not only about me inspiring others, but also others inspiring even more female population in our ecosystem - to believe in themselves and in whatever dream they want to accomplish. Together, #WECAN
6. Would you kindly share a parting message for aspiring young women?
Be courageous to raise your hand and go after ambitious progression in your life. Dare to have bold dream and strive to achieve it. Ignore the naysayer. Don’t be afraid even if your dream will make you different amongst the crowd. You are extraordinary. Be the best version of yourselves, onward and upward.
