Shell telah menandatangani Kontrak Bagi Hasil (PSC) dengan SKK Migas untuk blok laut dalam di wilayah Indonesia Timur, yakni di Pulau Moa Selatan, Provinsi Maluku.  Lokasi blok Pulau Moa Selatan berada di kedalaman perairan antara 1.500 hingga 2.700 meter.

Peristiwa penting ini menandai kembalinya Shell sebagai operator PSC yang merupakan kelanjutan dari kembali masuknya Shell ke sektor hulu di Indonesia sejak tahun 2011, melalui proyek Floating LNG Abadi yang dioperasikan oleh Inpex.  

"Shell memiliki rentang sejarah bisnis yang panjang dan aktif di Indonesia, bahkan telah dimulai pada tahun 1880-an di Sumatera. Kami senang dapat kembali dan bekerja sama dengan Pemerintah Indonesia untuk melakukan eksplorasi di daerah lepas pantai Indonesia Timur," ujar Graeme Smith, VP Eksplorasi untuk Asia dan Australia di Royal Dutch Shell

"Blok ini menawarkan kesempatan eksplorasi yang menarik untuk menerapkan kemampuan teknis terkini kami di laut dalam dan pengalaman operasional yang telah kami bangun di seluruh dunia selama tiga dekade terakhir," lanjut Graeme.

Shell akan menggunakan teknologi terdepan dalam eksplorasi laut dalam, termasuk alat-alat canggih  untuk memperoleh, mengolah dan menafsirkan data geofisika seismik dan lainnya. Hal ini akan meningkatkan pemahaman terhadap potensi sumber daya.

Berdasarkan perjanjian PSC tersebut, Shell akan melakukan penilaian atas potensi blok Pulau Moa Selatan, yang mencakup areal seluas 8.200km2. Blok ini terletak sekitar 300 kilometer dari lepas pantai.
