Janice’s story
Janice Lim, a Process Technologist based in Singapore, tells us why she wanted to join Shell during her undergraduate days, and how her time here has taken her around the world and enriched her professional and personal development.
I’m Janice, Process Technologist based in Singapore. During my undergraduate days, I aspired to join Shell after I learnt about the huge emphasis Shell places on personal development. I was enticed by Shell’s vast range of career and development opportunities and the open, forward-looking culture.
I have since spent 5 fulfilling years at Shell Singapore’s manufacturing site. The enriching personal development I have received so far is one of the key reasons why I feel motivated at work. Let me share more about how I remain excited to be a part of this dynamic organisation.
Shell strongly believes in developing its employees to their fullest potential. Within a span of 5 years, I have had multiple opportunities to travel to numerous countries for training, workshops and conferences. I have also visited other manufacturing sites and gained a broader perspective on how Shell operates across different countries and cultures.
A few months into my first role, I had my first work trip to Amsterdam for training. I was very fortunate to meet and learn from experienced engineers so early on in my career.
Besides attending training sessions, I was able to spare some time during the weekend for some sightseeing in the Netherlands!
Through these exchanges around the world, I picked up best practices and shared my learnings with my team mates in Singapore. Attending conferences and workshops also allowed me to expand my network and learn from like-minded colleagues. I am very thankful that Shell’s extensive, multi-national footprint has given me numerous, continued opportunities to broaden my horizons.
This picture was taken during a site visit to Moerdijk. It was especially meaningful to me as I got to witness how my process unit was being operated in a totally different environment! The Moerdijk team was very helpful and we learnt a lot from each other through many fruitful discussions.
I was recently given the opportunity to attend a conference in Rome about the process technology that I work on. I picked up knowledge on the latest technological developments and was able to network with many other technology licensees.
Not only am I given development opportunities and exposure at a global level, I am also constantly challenged to maximise my potential to the fullest at my workplace. In my various assignments, I am fortunate to have line managers who believe in me and continuously provide me with new challenges and real responsibilities.
Despite my relative lack of experience, I was recently entrusted to lead a large-scale catalyst change out where I was given the space and freedom to manage multiple project workstreams. That said, my experienced colleagues were always there to provide guidance whenever I needed support, and that is something I am deeply grateful for.
This photo captured the instance I was challenged to lead a large-scale catalyst change out. I was surrounded by a team of experienced colleagues who were always ready to lend a helping hand.
On top of development opportunities, I have also developed true friendships with colleagues. We have a very tight-knit culture, and the workplace is just like a second home to me. This is where we celebrate happy moments together and provide support to each other through difficult times. We also spend a substantial amount of time outside work together – be it for food, exercise or even overseas travel!

I went on a short holiday to Vietnam with some of my colleagues.
Shell provides an encouraging and supportive environment for my career growth. As an employee, I am empowered to make positive changes at the workplace. I am given ample opportunities to develop globally across multiple challenging tasks. Here, I get to work, interact with, and learn from the best minds in the industry. The support and friendship that I receive from my colleagues both in and out of work makes Shell a great place to work. It has been a fulfilling 5 years so far and I can’t wait for many more to come!
